She looks to me to have been fashioned from whatever pieces of scrap wood were lying around many many years ago
I think it’s quite a significant document as a portrait of what a young scholar was reading in 1865

1911 Tramp Art Box with Chip Carved Stacks and Green-Gray Velvet jointed wood balancing ballerinasI typically go for old tramp art boxes completely covered with chip carved layers, but I really like the velvet on the exterior of this one, which appears to be a soft gray green on a few of the sides and more of a gray blue elsewhere, but I think it is probably all the same fabric which just sun faded in different ways, very much to the good in my opinion. I think it all makes for a nice combination of Victorian and folky, but with nice clean lines
