She is considered the fiercer, demon fighting form of Shiva's wife, goddess Parvati. Durga is depicted with 10 arms and rides a lion or a tiger carrying powerful weapons. She fought and defeated the demon Mahishasura Durga and is also known as Mahishasuramardini, the killer of Mahishasura.
