The defeat of the Roman legions under Publius Quinctilius Varus (46 BC 9 AD) by the Germanic tribes led by Arminius (c18 BC 21 AD). Three whole legions were destroyed and Varus was killed in the battle. From A History of Germany by HE Marshall.
