and the brass looks very much to me like  melted down shell casings

I'm quite fascinated by them

with a few scratches to the finish at the base of the handle and a couple of black spots on the wood

I believe this is quite an early carved boot American I believe, and earlyish 19th c. I would guess and I believe it was meant to function as a pipe tamper. I really love the form, very folky and a little awkward, but also with this great high heel. And I especially love the old iron nails that run both down the front and around the
