Defence of Fort Sumter, South Carolina mb-code CB063060 Scene with womenDefence of Fort Sumter, South Carolina, 1861 (c1880). Fort Sumter was the place where the opening shots of the American Civil War were fired, on 12 April 1861. The following day the Union garrison surrendered.
