It was created when a meteorite struck the Earth in what is now the Nrdlinger Ries crater (Germany). The impact melted surrounding rock and ejected it into the atmosphere, where it cooled extremely quickly while falling back to Earth, forming Moldavite. It is not a mineral or crystal, but an amorphous impact glass, which is why it has no crystal structure
